GitHub has announced Agent HQ, a major update that integrates AI agents directly into the GitHub workflow. Rather than introducing a separate interface or tool, GitHub is making agents native to the existing developer experience—from pull requests to Actions.

🧩 𝗔𝗻 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗻 𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗲𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺

Agent HQ turns GitHub into a hub for multiple coding agents from providers such as OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Cognition, and xAI, all available through a paid Copilot subscription.

This unified approach aims to reduce fragmentation across AI coding tools and centralise their management, governance, and monitoring.

Developers will soon be able to assign and track agents through a new Mission Control interface—accessible across GitHub, VS Code, CLI, and mobile. Each agent can run tasks in parallel, with fine-grained controls for CI, permissions, and access policies.

🧠 𝗘𝘅𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗩𝗦 𝗖𝗼𝗱𝗲

In VS Code, GitHub introduces Plan Mode, a new way to collaborate with Copilot. It asks clarifying questions and builds a structured plan before code generation—improving accuracy and reducing rework.

Developers can also define custom agents through AGENTS.md files to specify coding preferences or enforce testing conventions.

Additionally, VS Code now supports the GitHub MCP Registry, enabling one-click setup for integrations such as Stripe, Figma, and Sentry. VS Code is currently the only editor to implement the full MCP specification.
